Dinosaur Isle

Sandown seafront dinosaur museum with Isle of Wight fossils, family exhibitions and guided fossil activity at selected times.

Dinosaur Isle is Sandown seafront at its most useful: a dinosaur museum beside the fossil-rich coast around Yaverland and Culver Parade. It is one of the easiest Isle of Wight attractions to recommend when children need something more focused than the beach and adults need shelter, toilets and a clear plan. Start with Sandown, then let the museum give the bay a completely different layer.

Inside, the draw is not just big models and glass cases. Dinosaur Isle connects the Isle of Wight fossil story with the cliffs and beaches outside the door, so a walk along the shore suddenly feels less like a wander and more like a hunt through deep time. The museum also runs fossil-related activities and guided walks at selected times, which makes it worth checking ahead during school holidays.

It pairs well with Brading Roman Villa if you want a history-heavy east Wight day, or with a simple seafront lunch if attention spans are running short. Add a beach bucket, a warm layer and a little patience for the gift shop, and it becomes a whole morning rather than a rushed indoor stop.

If you have children who collect stones, shells and questions, this is one of the rare places where all three feel welcome.
