Bonchurch Open Gardens brings more than 15 private plots across Bonchurch together for one self-guided afternoon through some of south Wight's most personal planting. Part of the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival, the event is community-run and draws on the village's unusually mild microclimate and the variety it produces. Cottage-style borders, wildlife-friendly spaces and established coastal gardens with sea views all feature, and a printed map handed out on the day lets you move between them at whatever pace suits.
Tickets are £8 per adult; children under 16 get in free, which takes the sting out of a spontaneous family afternoon. The event runs from 1pm to 5pm, and a free hop-on/hop-off minibus loops between garden locations throughout so you are not committed to the full walking route. Shore Road car park has free parking if you are driving in. From Ventnor, the village is walkable, or Southern Vectis buses stop at Trinity Road and Bonchurch Shute. Gardens sit on private land with uneven paths, slopes and soft ground in places, so sturdy footwear is worth pulling on before you go. Dogs are welcome in some gardens but not all, at each owner's discretion.
All proceeds go to local community initiatives and the upkeep of shared village spaces, so the ticket price lands somewhere useful. Worth knowing: the event also runs on Saturday 4 July with the same hours, giving you a choice of days if Sunday does not work. For more heritage and history events on the island, or if you are building a broader day out with children, the family events listings cover what else is running through the same part of the summer.
