Hidden Gems of Ryde

Ryde heritage highlights loop — Bus Museum, Monkton Arts, Appley Tower — Wed 14 May 2026, 10:30am–12:30pm. Donations welcomed; register via festival.

Presented by Isle of Wight Walking Festival

Ryde tends to be the place people pass through rather than linger in. This walk on 14 May makes the case for staying longer. The two-hour heritage loop covers the Bus Museum, Monkton Arts on East Street, and Appley Tower on the seafront, connecting three sites that rarely appear on the same tourist map and collectively tell a more interesting story about the town than the pier and the hovercraft alone.

The route runs through Victorian streets that have changed less than they look, past civic buildings that carry the ambition of a town that once expected to be more visited than it is. Monkton Arts is worth building time around on its own: the gallery, studios, and coffee house make it the kind of creative hub that most towns twice Ryde's size would be glad to have. The walk passes it in context rather than in isolation.

Donation-based entry; register through the Walking Festival. Good for families and for anyone curious about the town beyond the seafront. More walking routes across the island throughout the festival week.
