Julia Margaret Cameron: From Calcutta to Freshwater

Penny Smith traces Julia Margaret Cameron’s life from Calcutta to Freshwater in an evening talk at Freshwater Methodist Church.

Presented by Freshwater Methodist Church

Julia Margaret Cameron’s life ranged far beyond the west Wight village with which her name is now closely linked. Penny Smith’s talk, “From Calcutta to Freshwater”, follows the photographer’s life and work into Freshwater Methodist Church. For anyone who knows Cameron chiefly through Dimbola and her portraits, the title offers a wider starting point: the places and experiences that shaped the woman behind the camera. The public invitation says everyone is welcome, so it is open to curious newcomers as well as people already interested in photographic history.

Doors open at 7pm on Tuesday 6 October, with the talk beginning at 7.30pm. The organiser has not published a finishing time or an admission price. Refreshments and a raffle are advertised, so bringing some cash may be useful, though payment arrangements are not specified. The church is on Brookside Road in Freshwater. If you need information about step-free access or seating, contact the organiser ahead of time; those details are not in the event notice.

This heritage talk connects an internationally known photographer with the Island community where she later lived and worked. It is a more focused way to spend an evening than a general museum visit, with a named speaker and a single subject. The Facebook announcement is the best place to check whether the organiser adds a price, changes the running time or posts any booking instructions before the day.
