Two hours of Irish music, live accordion and fiddle, and the story of Danny the fisherman and his straight-talking wife Rosie, moving between Dublin's cobbles and Murphy's Tavern. One Night in Dublin is the kind of show that Shanklin Theatre does well: a touring production with real musicians, a cast that knows the difference between playing to an audience and performing at one, and a set list that covers the full Irish popular canon from The Pogues to The Dubliners.
"Galway Girl", "The Wild Rover", "Dirty Old Town", "Tell Me Ma": the songs are all there, played live on fiddle and accordion by musicians who are performing rather than running through a sequence. The theatre programmes this kind of show throughout the year, and One Night in Dublin has been around long enough to have a following of people who have seen it before and choose to see it again. The combination of live music and a narrative thread gives the evening more structure than a straight concert without losing the musicality.
Tickets around £28; book through Shanklin Theatre. Suitable for families and all ages. More music events on the Isle of Wight on the spring and summer calendar.
