Historian Tim Wander brings a talk on the Anglo-Zulu War to Bembridge Fort, using original weapons and film excerpts to look at the conflict and how it has been portrayed since. The fort isn't a Zulu War site. It still gives the afternoon a strong sense of place. The Bembridge Fort Trust is presenting the talk, and proceeds go to its charity work. Come for the military history and for the stories that grew up around this particular war.
It's ticketed: Saturday 10 October at 2pm, doors at 1.30pm. The listed price is £10 before the booking fee, and when we checked, TicketSource showed £10.78 with its fee included. Book there. Don't count on a place at the door. The public listing gives no finish time. Bembridge Fort is on Culver Down, so leave time for the approach and for finding the entrance. If steps or uneven ground could be a problem, ask the organiser about access.
This history event is a focused afternoon with a named speaker and real objects. It isn't a general open day. Go by the ticket page for the date and time, although, annoyingly, one line of its description gives a different October date. Check your booking confirmation carefully. The official ticket listing has the current fee and availability. If you need a precise end time, contact the Trust before you travel.
