Bembridge Fort sits on the Culver Down ridge above the eastern tip of the island with what must be one of the most commanding defensive positions on the Solent coast. The walk on 16 May is led by a local historian who has researched the fort's construction, use, and current state in detail. Two and a half hours on the ridge, looking out toward France on a clear day, with the story of a fortification that was obsolete almost as soon as it opened.
Bembridge Fort was completed in 1862 as part of the Palmerston coastal defence programme and was never fired in anger. The volunteer donation-based ticket structure reflects a walk that earns its keep through the quality of the history rather than any formal booking system. The Culver Down landscape is worth the walk alone: chalk downland dropping to white cliffs, with seabirds working the updrafts along the scarp edge.
Voluntary donation tickets on Eventbrite. Part of the Walking Festival programme. Combine with the coastal path eastward to the Chalk Cliffs if you want to extend the afternoon.
