The Chillerton & Gatcombe Scarecrow Festival turns the two villages into a half-term trail of gallybaggers, with scarecrows appearing in gardens, lanes and village corners across the parish. Start with a map, then let the children lead the way between the displays, keeping an eye on the quieter rural roads where pavements can be patchy.
This is a proper community-made family event: households build the scarecrows, volunteers serve tea and cake, and visitors vote for their favourites. Maps are available from The Gallybagger Inn and the Village Hall, while Aunt Sally’s Tea-Room opens daily for drinks and homemade cakes. Live music is also part of the 2026 programme, with another music day planned for Saturday 30 May.
The fun sits across Chillerton & Gatcombe, so give yourself time rather than trying to rush it between errands. It works well for families who want a low-cost Isle of Wight half-term outing with something to spot every few minutes.
