Dogmum at Ventnor Arts Club (17 July)

Dogmum premieres at Ventnor Fringe on 17 July, with Amy Ambrose bringing a late-night musical rom-com about a woman, her cockapoo and modern life.

Presented by Amy Ambrose

Dogmum lands at Ventnor Arts Club on Friday 17 July as a 9.30pm Ventnor Fringe premiere, which tells you straight away this is not a polite early-evening sit-down. Amy Ambrose's musical rom-com follows a woman and her cockapoo Alfie, so expect something playful, slightly chaotic and tuned to the sort of feelings people usually hide behind jokes and good intentions.

That late slot changes the mood. This is the show you wander into after food, after a drink, after the sea air has gone out of the day and Ventnor starts to feel a bit looser round the edges. A one-woman piece with a dog at the centre could have been twee, but the rom-com framing suggests sharper writing and a more recognisable grown-up mess underneath. If you like Fringe work that sounds intimate rather than overblown, this will probably be one to book early.

Ventnor Arts Club suits this scale of performance because it keeps the audience close and makes a small story feel immediate. It belongs with the island's arts and crafts events, especially for anyone who wants theatre with a bit of bite instead of a safe night out. The 9.30pm start also makes it a good second act if you are already building a proper Ventnor evening around the Fringe.
