Saturday's Dogmum performance at Ventnor Arts Club gives you a second chance if Friday sold fast or you would rather save your Fringe theatre for the weekend proper. Amy Ambrose brings the same musical rom-com set-up, with cockapoo Alfie in the middle of it, and the 9.30pm slot again points to a show that leans into the night's energy rather than trying to behave like a matinee.
Some Fringe shows work best when you have already had a day out and are ready for something clever, funny and a little more intimate than the outdoor bustle. This sounds like one of those. A personal comedy with songs and a dog could go soft very quickly, so the appeal here is the promise of a sharper edge and a point of view that fits the small-hours festival crowd better than broad, family-friendly fluff would.
If you like the idea of theatre that feels close, conversational and slightly unruly, Ventnor is the right place to try it. Ventnor Arts Club has the kind of room where a performer can hold the whole audience without much distance, and this belongs with the best of the island's arts and crafts listings. Keep it for the later part of your evening, not the start, and it should land better for it.
