The Isle of Wight Rare Breeds Farm Open Day gives families four hours at Isle of Wight Rare Breeds in Alverstone. Cows, goats, sheep, donkeys and horses are all part of the day at Oaklea Dairy. Tickets are £6.15 and cover admission and tractor-and-trailer rides. Children under two go free. Everyone over two needs a ticket, so book before you set off rather than chancing it at the gate.
There is a farm trail to follow, plus games and activities for children. You can meet the animals and take a tractor ride, then browse the farm’s pop-up shop, without cramming it all into an hour. Food and drink cost extra: drinks, milkshakes, snacks and pizza are listed for the day. The organiser bills it as a family day, with the activities spread across the Alverstone farm. Good for children who want to keep moving. And for adults who would rather have a clear plan than spend Sunday negotiating another vague promise of ‘somewhere nice’.
The open day runs from 11am to 3pm on Sunday 4 October at Oaklea Dairy, Main Road, Alverstone. Most of the visit takes place around a working farm, so wear shoes that can cope with outdoor ground and check the weather before you leave.
