Fossil Fun Day: Identification Drop-in

Join the rangers on Fort Victoria’s shoreline, or bring a fossil for identification at the free Fossil Fun Day near Yarmouth.

Fossil Fun Day’s identification drop-in takes place in the Corner Room at Fort Victoria, near Yarmouth, on Monday 26 October. Bring a fossil you have found, or come along to learn about the Island’s ancient fish, turtles and crocodiles. The free session is part of the council Ranger Service’s half-term fossil programme, with experts helping visitors make sense of what they have picked up on the beach.

The drop-in runs from 11am to 1pm, giving you a chance to ask about a mysterious find without booking a guided shoreline walk. You do not need to have a collection to take part: looking at local fossils and hearing how they relate to animals from the past is part of the session too. If a child has a pocketful of stones that all seem important, bring them along and let the questions lead the visit.

Head to the Corner Room at Fort Victoria Country Park. Admission to this morning session is free; the separately advertised guided fossil hunts have their own prices and start times. Check those with the Rangers Office if you want to add a beach walk afterwards. You can keep this visit short or give a curious child more time with their questions. The Island’s family programme has other hands-on activities for the rest of the school holiday.
