How the Romans Used Wood with Edmund Green

Woodturner Edmund Green explores Roman tools and everyday uses of wood through an illustrated talk and live demonstration at Brading Roman Villa.

See how Roman woodworking connects with a modern Isle of Wight workshop at Brading Roman Villa. Professional woodturner Edmund Green brings an illustrated talk and live demonstration to the museum, exploring the uses of wood in Roman daily life. If you like watching a craftsperson work, you can follow the tools and techniques as well as hear the history behind them. It takes place on Saturday 7 November, from 2pm to 3pm.

Edmund will point to Roman tools discovered in the 1870s that resemble equipment he uses in his own work. The programme also poses a question: did the Romans use a lathe? Stories and a working demonstration give that question a practical setting. You can watch woodturning in action while thinking about how an ancient craft relates to the objects and methods of today. The organiser describes a demonstration; it doesn’t advertise individual tuition or a take-home making project.

Tickets cost £8.50 and are available through the villa’s booking service. Allow the advertised hour for the talk, and check separate museum admission arrangements if you’d like to extend your visit. Drivers should note that the villa gives PO36 0EN for satnav, while its postal address uses PO36 0PH. Other Isle of Wight heritage events are worth a look if you want another museum talk or history visit in the diary.
