The final day of the spring Isle of Wight Walking Festival falls on Sunday 17 May, and it has a different feel to the weekday routes. Families tend to come out more, and the west Wight walks that close the programme are among the most open, windswept, and memorable of the whole four days. One route tackles 13 miles of coastal downland from Freshwater in an arc that the walking community quietly refers to as one of the finest days out on the island.
The shorter walks on the final day include a gentle royal-history stroll at Osborne and a guided loop at Queen Victoria's island estate that covers the notable guests she entertained here. There are options for most ability levels, and several walks are free or donation-based. The guides are at their most relaxed on Sundays, which tends to make the commentary sharper.
Check the festival website to confirm the Sunday programme and book your place. Some routes have very limited numbers. Browse walking events if you want to keep going once the festival wraps.
