Of Mice and Men

Nigel Miles-Thomas and Michael Roy Andrew perform Of Mice and Men at Quay Arts in Newport, directed by Larry Lamb in a compact stage adaptation.

Of Mice and Men comes to Quay Arts in Newport in a stage adaptation by Nigel Miles-Thomas, who performs alongside Michael Roy Andrew. Larry Lamb directs the production. John Steinbeck’s story follows George and Lennie, two travelling workers holding on to the hope of a place of their own. Their search takes them to a California ranch, where the prospect of steady work seems to bring that hope a little closer.

The pair’s friendship sits at the centre of the story. George looks ahead and tries to protect their shared future; Lennie’s strength and lack of understanding repeatedly put it at risk. Against the hardships of the Great Depression, a job can offer security while one mistake can undo it. This adaptation condenses those relationships and difficult choices into a performance advertised at sixty-five minutes with no interval. It suits an audience drawn to character-led drama and a story worth discussing afterwards.

The café and bar open from 6.30pm, doors to the performance open at 7pm and the play starts at 7.30pm. You can arrive early enough for a drink before settling in. An advance ticket costs £18 plus a £1.75 booking fee, making £19.75; the advertised door price is £21. For a Newport evening of arts and performance, book ahead and ask Quay Arts about any age guidance or access arrangements you need.
