Queen Victoria used Osborne House as a private retreat, which meant that the Isle of Wight hosted a parade of Victorian public figures who would not otherwise have come near a small island in the Solent. This two-hour Sunday walk on 17 May covers the easier royal-history stroll in the festival programme: the grounds and environs of the estate, with a guide narrating the notable guests and their visits and what they made of the island.
The list is not short. Tennyson visited repeatedly. Garibaldi came. European heads of state passed through. The walk places these visits in physical context, connecting the views from the estate, the approach roads, and the landing points at East Cowes to the recorded accounts of what people experienced arriving here. It is an easy afternoon on gentle terrain, suitable for most ability levels, and good for families with children who have some interest in Victorian history.
Donations welcomed; register through the Walking Festival. Sunday afternoon, 2:30pm start. Part of the heritage events running across the final day of the spring festival.
