Brading Roman Villa has some of the finest preserved Roman mosaic floors outside Bath, but most visitors spend their time inside the museum. The self-guided nature trail around the grounds on 13 May gives the site a different shape: two miles of loop path through the farmland and hedgerows that surround the villa, with the Isle of Wight Walking Festival providing a structured route that connects the archaeology to the wider landscape.
The walk takes roughly an hour at a relaxed pace. It covers meadow and field-edge paths where the flora in mid-May is worth paying attention to, and where the low ridge behind the villa opens up views across Brading Marshes toward Bembridge Harbour. Families with children who want something more active than standing in front of mosaics tend to find this a good balance.
Free to join, but booking via the Walking Festival or Eventbrite is advised. The villa itself charges normal admission, which is worth paying if you have not been inside before. More heritage walks across the island during the festival week.
