Monday of the running festival week has a different character from the weekend opening: fewer casual participants, more people who have planned the full programme. The Isle of Wight Festival of Running day on 1 June is based at West Wight Sports and Community Centre in Freshwater, with routes that explore the coastal and countryside paths of the west Wight at various distances.
June running on the Island has a quality that April and May do not quite match: the season is warmer, the paths are firm, and the visibility across the downland and along the coast is better. The west Wight routes on this day cross the Afton Down area, pass through the Freshwater Bay approaches, and cover some of the sections of the Tennyson Trail that most runners encounter only as part of longer challenge routes. Monday of the festival week tends to be quieter, which makes the route conditions better.
