Mysterious Fruit at Quay Arts invites children and grown-ups to draw together in Newport. Artists Steve and Ella Baxter lead a free drop-in where your hands, arms and movements help shape a large shared artwork. The session uses structures found in nature as a starting point, with a long plant or vine growing across the communal drawing. You can add fruit, curves, circles, colour and marks to the picture as it develops.
The workshop draws on Steve Baxter's collaboration with Ventnor Botanic Garden. Its emphasis on gesture gives you a way into drawing without having to produce a neat, finished picture of your own. Different sizes of circle and curve will form the fruits along the vine, leaving room for individual marks within the shared piece. The organisers welcome ages 3 to 90, so this is an activity adults can join alongside the children. All materials come with the session, and you can arrive without buying a pack of art supplies first.
Drop into the Seminar Room between 10am and 1pm on Tuesday 20 October. Entry is free, which makes it easier to try a creative morning without committing to a paid course. The indoor venue gives you an option if the October weather turns wet. Leave time for the children to get involved rather than squeezing it into a rushed errand.
