Round the Island Race starts from Cowes and sends yachts on a 50 nautical mile circuit of the Isle of Wight in one of the great one-day sailing sights of the summer. The scale is the hook: around 1000 boats, crews of different levels and a route that turns the whole Island coastline into part of the event.
The race works for two audiences. Sailors need the Island Sailing Club entry route and race instructions; spectators can choose a Cowes start, a west Wight viewpoint, a south coast cliff stop or a finish back near the Solent. Even if you only catch part of it, the sight of the fleet moving round the Island gives the day a sense of occasion.
Start times can shift with race planning, so use the official race page before setting an alarm. For families, the easiest version is often a shoreline plan with drinks, layers and a second stop in mind. It sits naturally with the Island's sport and fitness events, but it has enough atmosphere for anyone who loves Cowes in full sailing mode.
If you are not racing, choose your viewpoint around the rest of the day. A good picnic spot beats a stressful dash between headlands, especially with children in tow.
