Saturday night at Shanklin Theatre for The Scarlet Pimpernel tends to be the strongest house of the Shoreline Productions run. The Wildhorn musical has the dramatic arc for a Saturday audience: the French Revolution scenes carry genuine tension, the London drawing room scenes offer comic relief, and the central disguise plot gives the audience a puzzle to follow while the score builds toward the second act climax.
Shanklin Theatre seats around 400, which is close enough that the production does not need to compensate for distance. Saturday casts in a four-night run are usually the sharpest: the cast has the opening performances behind them and the knowledge that the final night is still ahead. The result tends to be a performance that has confidence without the slightly excessive energy that closing nights sometimes bring.
Tickets around £23; book through Shanklin Theatre. Suitable for adults and families. More arts events on the Isle of Wight across the late spring season.
