Fourteen pubs across the northeast of the island, one pub crawl weekend in May, and the North East Ale Trail Festival. The format rewards two things: a genuine interest in cask ale and an afternoon with no fixed schedule. The trail runs through villages and coastal towns on the eastern side of the island, from Bembridge and St Helens through Brading and into Ryde, connecting pubs that individually are worth a visit and collectively represent a cross-section of island pub culture that a standard itinerary does not produce.
The northeast corner of the island is undervisited relative to the beaches on the south coast and the walking routes in the west, and the ale trail gives a specific reason to spend time there. The pubs on the route range from harbour-side locals to village free houses, and the ales change through the season as breweries rotate stock. The event format gives the weekend structure without over-scheduling it.
