Museum of Ryde

Museum of Ryde is a local-history museum in the basement of Royal Victoria Arcade on Union Street, run by Historic Ryde Society volunteers.

Museum of Ryde is a local-history museum beneath Royal Victoria Arcade on Union Street in Ryde. You go below street level to reach the town's past, and the building is part of the story: Lord Lambton laid the arcade's foundation stone in 1835. Historic Ryde Society opened the museum in the restored basement in 2011. Volunteers look after the exhibitions and welcome visitors. Afterwards you're back on Union Street with the arcade's earlier life in mind.

The building also has an internal ice well, found in 2012. The society is raising funds to restore it and open it to visitors. For now, treat that as a restoration project: access to the well is separate from an ordinary museum visit. It's one more detail in the history of the arcade.

Teachers and local group organisers can arrange visits with the museum team, who can adapt activities around their interests, and schools can ask about activity worksheets when they discuss a visit. If transport history is more your thing, the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum is a separate Ryde attraction with vintage vehicles. For Museum of Ryde, head for Royal Victoria Arcade: the collection is in the basement on Union Street.
